Have available words and pictures printouts. Make a sentence strip with the sentence frame: The wheels on the __________ go round and round.
Let children read the sentence with you. Ask if they know which word is missing in the sentence. Say "Yes, the word "bus" is missing. Which letter does the word "bus" begin with? Yes, the word bus starts with the letter "b." Can you find the word "bus"? Have children add the missing words/pictures to each sentence, and then match the correct pictures/words to them.
Let children replace the word/picture "bus" with another vehicle word/picture. Read sentence together.
